The
flutter has the effect of causing an interruption in the exhaled breath,
which causes a backpressure to help keep the large airways open during
exhalation. The oscillation of the air causes the airways to move and so
shake the mucus from the sides. It also has a shearing effect, helping to
reduce the viscosity of the mucus, making it easier to expectorate.
